Little LAD Locks is a service provided by Little Lady Locks, a UK registered children's charity.

Our mission is simple: to help boys feel comfortable, confident, and like themselves again after losing their hair to alopecia, cancer, burns or any other medical condition.

Provided through our network of specialist hair-loss barbers across the UK, we provide bespoke hair replacement systems for boys under the age of 18.

What Is a Hair System?

A hair system is a non-surgical hair replacement solution designed to replicate the appearance of natural hair.

Unlike a traditional wig, a hair system is securely attached to the scalp using specialist skin-safe tapes or adhesives. This allows the hair to look, feel, and move naturally while blending seamlessly with any existing hair.

Hair systems are lightweight, breathable, and designed for everyday life, allowing children to:

  • Attend school confidently
  • Play sports and take part in activities
  • Sleep whilst wearing the system
  • Enjoy normal day-to-day life

Every system is carefully colour-matched, density-matched, and styled to suit the child's age, appearance, and individual needs.

How Do Hair Systems Work?

Every child begins with a consultation so we can understand their hair loss, lifestyle, and goals.

Once fitted, the system is secured using specialist skin-friendly tape or adhesive and can remain in place until maintenance is required.

Parents and guardians can choose to:

  • Learn how to maintain the system themselves at home
  • Attend regular maintenance appointments with a specialist barber
  • Receive guidance and support from our team whenever needed

Our focus is always on comfort, confidence, and creating the most natural result possible.

  • Help you choose suitable colours and styles online

Our aim is to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible for both parents and children.

What Costs Are Covered?

Little Lad Locks is funded entirely through donations and fundraising through Little Lady Locks Children's Charity.

Due to the large number of children needing our services, we currently provide up to £500 per child, per year towards their hair replacement journey.

In most cases, this funding covers:

  • One hair system
  • One professional fitting appointment
  • Initial consultation and support

Most families find that this covers the cost of their child's first hair system and fitting.

If additional support is needed, we can provide a FREE fundraising pack to help families raise money towards future maintenance costs or replacement systems.

Our Hair System Options

Every child experiences hair loss differently, which is why Little Lad Locks offers three different hair system options.

During your consultation, we will discuss which option is most suitable based on your child's hair loss, lifestyle, and personal preference.

1. Partial Hair System (Patch Coverage)

A Partial Hair System is designed for children with one or more localised hair loss patches.

These small systems are custom-cut to cover the affected area only and are blended with the child's existing hair for a natural appearance.

To ensure the system is attached securely, a small amount of natural hair around the patch may need to be carefully shaved so that specialist tape or adhesive can be applied directly to the scalp.

Benefits include:

  • Covers individual bald patches
  • Blends naturally with existing hair
  • Minimal shaving required
  • Lightweight and discreet
  • Usually available within 1–4 weeks

2. Top Hair System

A Top Hair System is designed for children experiencing hair loss across the top and crown area of the head whilst still retaining hair on the sides and back.

The system covers the entire top section and blends into the child's natural hair around the perimeter.

If there is still natural hair present where the system will be fitted, this area will need to be shaved to allow the tape or adhesive to bond securely to the scalp.

Benefits include:

  • Covers larger areas of hair loss on the top and crown
  • Creates a natural appearance with existing side and back hair
  • Ideal for more advanced hair loss patterns
  • Can achieve a modern skin-fade style when appropriate

3. Full Hair System

A Full Hair System is designed for children with complete or extensive hair loss.

This system covers the entire scalp, including the crown, sides, sideburns, and nape area, creating a full head of natural-looking hair.

If your child still has natural hair remaining, a full head shave will usually be required before fitting to ensure the system sits comfortably and securely against the scalp.

For children with complete hair loss, no shaving will be necessary.

Benefits include:

  • Full head coverage
  • Completely bespoke and custom-made
  • Colour, density, and style matched to the child
  • Natural appearance and movement
  • Suitable for complete hair loss caused by alopecia, cancer treatment, or other medical conditions

Maintenance Responsibilities

Hair systems require ongoing maintenance to keep them secure, hygienic, comfortable, and natural-looking.

Maintenance may include:

  • Removing the system
  • Cleaning the scalp and base
  • Replacing tape or adhesive
  • Trimming natural hair growth
  • Re-applying the system

Most systems require maintenance every 1–4 weeks, although this varies depending on activity levels, skin type, and perspiration.

Parents and guardians can choose to:

  • Learn maintenance themselves
  • Attend professional maintenance appointments
  • Use a combination of both options

We are happy to provide training and guidance to help reduce ongoing costs.

Funding & Fundraising Support

As a charity, our funding is limited and demand for our services continues to grow.

We can provide:

  • FREE fundraising packs
  • Sponsorship forms
  • Fundraising ideas
  • School fundraising support
  • Community fundraising guidance
  • Online fundraising support

Many families successfully fundraise to cover maintenance appointments and future systems.

Safeguarding & Privacy

The safety, wellbeing, and dignity of every child are our highest priorities.

All consultations, fittings, and appointments are carried out in a child-centred, supportive environment by trained professionals.

Children are never required to be filmed, photographed, or share their story publicly in order to receive support.

Any photographs, videos, or case studies are only shared with the full consent of the child and their parent or guardian.

All consultations and fittings are conducted privately and respectfully, ensuring every child feels safe, comfortable, and supported throughout their journey with Little Lad Locks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child eligible?

Children must be under 18, live within the UK, and be experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition, treatment, injury, or other health-related cause.

How much funding does the charity provide?

We currently provide up to £500 per child, per year towards a hair system and initial fitting.

How often does a hair system need maintenance?

Most systems require maintenance every 1–4 weeks depending on activity levels, sweating, and the type of system fitted.

Can we learn to maintain the system ourselves?

Yes. Our specialists can provide face-to-face or Zoom training so parents can learn how to maintain the system at home.

Do you offer fittings outside Manchester?

Yes. We work with approved specialist barbers and hair system providers throughout the UK.

Will my child need to shave their hair?

This depends on the type of system selected. Partial systems may require a small amount of shaving around the patch. Top systems usually require the top section to be shaved. Full systems generally require a full head shave if natural hair remains.

Can my child sleep, play sports, and swim with a hair system?

Yes. Hair systems are designed for everyday life and can usually be worn during sleeping, sports, swimming, and normal activities. There hair system should feel like their own natural hair.

What happens if my child has an allergic reaction?

Before fitting, we carry out adhesive patch testing wherever possible. If any sensitivity occurs, we can discuss alternative tapes or adhesives and advise you to seek medical advice where appropriate.

What if the system starts lifting?

Contact us or your fitting specialist. We can advise whether it needs re-securing or whether a maintenance appointment is required.

Can the system fall off?

Our tape and adhesives are designed to keep the hair system secure and in place. They have been trialled on rollercoaster, water slides and sky dives to ensure they do not fall off if correctly applied.

What if my child changes their mind?

Our priority is your child's comfort. If your child decides they do not wish to wear the system, it can be removed. Although you will need to keep in mind that with some systems do require the childs natural hair to be shaven.

What if my child needs another system within the same year?

As a charity, we can currently provide one funded system and fitting per child each year. Additional systems may need to be funded privately, although we are always happy to discuss individual circumstances and provide you with a FREE FUNDRAISING PACK.

How do I make a complaint?

If you have any concerns regarding your child's consultation, fitting, or aftercare, please contact our team directly. We will investigate all concerns fairly, respectfully, and confidentially.
